If you want to be a better marketer, you need to be a better writer. While not all writers are marketers (though you could argue that all writers are marketing something), marketers must be at the least good writers.
Said in another way: if you are selling something you better know how to write about it.
But what if you can’t? Or worse…what if you doubt your writing abilities?
Whether you can’t write well or simply think you’re horrendous at it, I’m here to tell you there’s hope! These three daily habits will increase your skills everyday and I promise your writing – and marketing savvy – will greatly improve.
1. DAILY JOURNALING
Writing everyday with pen and paper shows significant improvements in memory, empathy and interpersonal skills. Keyboards don’t count!
When you’re starting out, writing can seem daunting. You stare blankly at a piece of paper in hopes that inspiration will come knocking. Thing is, that’s not always how it works.
Writing everyday stimulates the cognitive processes that fuel your creativity. The cool thing? Science agrees with me.

2. READ, READ, READ
If writing were a chocolate chip cookie, reading would be the cold glass of milk to go with it. You literally can not have one without the other (or you could but damn that’s savage!).
As a writer, developing your skills as both a writer and reader is vital to your ultimate success.
Reading boosts cognitive skills, memory and (again) those empathy-building muscles that are so important in today’s ever-connected digital world.

In the meantime, head to your local library or log-in to Amazon and pick up a paperback (here’s my go-to reading list this year). While studies show reading fiction can better improve your ability to step into someone else’s shoes, reading for personal pleasure or professional development is always a good idea.
3. EDIT THE HELL OUT OF IT

Every writer loathes this next step.
It’s not easy to say goodbye to so many words but it’s absolutely necessary if you want your message to land with thousands of people around the world.
The key here? Brevity.
Editing is the hardest step because we believe we need all those words to paint a picture for our readers. Yet we as marketers know that consumers hate to be told what to do or how to think. While you can lead a potential client to the water, you can’t make them drink.
Cutting more is actually a good thing!
